Expression for Actors of all ages is for those who are completely new to acting or have been acting for years. • After completing Expression, you may take any course in the Instrument Series or Technique Series.

Preparation & Imagination

Instrument Series

Identifying the exact muscles of acting.

There are specific muscles used in acting. Clarifying exactly what these muscles are, takes your focus off of the performance, releases you from judging yourself as your work, and allows for the mind of growth. Because you’re able to identify the muscles you’re working on, you are able to look objectively at your work. This, in turn, allows you to be able to discuss your performance and to do that without feeling crushed (or elated). It’s simply the muscles of acting being developed.

This course is also offered as a self-paced online course. View: HERE

Dialogue

Instrument Series

Freeing authentic impulses in relationship and dialogue.

When we face another person, we often conceal or repress our feelings. We wear a mask, experiencing one thing internally and presenting something else externally. The work of an actor is to remove this mask. In Dialogue, you will learn the tools to begin to take off that mask, and in the process, learn how to bring greater individuality and spontaneity to your acting, and inhabit deeper relational skills.

This class is offered as a supplementary class for students enrolled in an online course, both self-guided and Zoom classes.

Course information:

  • Prerequisites: Active enrolment in an online course in the same month as your registration.
  • Cost: Free for students actively enrolled in an online class, in the same month as your registration.

TECHNIQUE SERIES

Scene Objective

Technique Series

Understanding and embodying the scene objective.

Nothing affects a role more than the actor’s choice of the scene objective. And nothing affects the actor’s work more than how an actor works with the scene objective. In this course, we examine how to choose a scene objective, how to realize the scene objective in your acting in a realistic way, and how to live the objective, rather than holding it in mind as a mental construct.

This course is also offered as a self-paced online course. View: HERE

Script Analysis

Technique Series

How to break down a script to bring the story to life.

The script is to the actor what the score is to the musician. The script dictates the appropriate directions, intentions, and relationships for the actor. But, just like each musician has their own interpretation of the music, the actor also has their own interpretation of the role. In this program, we look at how an actor’s interpretation of a script will enhance their performance, how to break down a layered script, and how to work with a weak script.

Super Task

Technique Series

Defining and embodying the super task.

The role you play lives within the context of the story and your character is there to support the story. If you don’t add to the story, you detract. In this course, you will learn how to find the super task, the central thread of your character that is key to bringing the story to life, and how to define each choice you make to support that super task.

DEFINITION SERIES

Relationship & Behaviour

Definition Series

Identifying how relationship affects the character’s behaviour.

We discover our behaviour when we interact with others. We behave differently in one relationship as opposed to another. Who we are depends on who we are with. If you do it in life, you must also find it in your acting. Learn how to identify your changing roles and how it affects your behaviour, and apply that same sensibility to your character to bring a greater level of realism to your work.

  • Prerequisites: One Instrument course and one Technique course
  • Cost: $190 + GST

Humour

Definition Series

Identifying and bringing to light the innate humour of every story and role.

Just as we look to find the humour in situations, the actor must find the humour in the character and in the story. Without the touch of humour the audience is fed melodrama. Learn the keys to discovering and highlighting the humour embedded in every story and in every role.

Course information:

  • Prerequisites: One Instrument course and one Technique course
  • Cost: $190 + GST
  • See our Artists Package for reduced rates or see our Financial Aid for financial assistance.

Objective & Realism

Definition Series

Building on scene objective work for enhanced realism.

This is the second level of scene objective work, bringing nuance to every scene through your use of the scene objective. In this course, you will be taught the tools to refine your objectives and ensure that you are using them to add heightened realism to every performance.

Course information:

  • Prerequisites: One Instrument course and Scene Objective
  • Cost: $190 + GST
  • See our Artists Package for reduced rates or see our Financial Aid for financial assistance.

All classes are listed 2 months in advance in a rotating order.

Laban Movement

Movement Series

Defining and adjusting basic movement patterns.

Discover your own patterns of movement and then adapt them for a role. Working with multiple models for the same role, you will discover how your movement choices impact your performance. Use this course as a refresher or as an introduction to the Laban Efforts. Laban is a powerful tool to get the actor out of their head.

Course information:

  • Prerequisites: One Instrument course, one Technique course, and one Definition course
  • Cost: $190 + GST
  • See our Artists Package for reduced rates or see our Financial Aid for financial assistance.

All classes are listed 2 months in advance in a rotating order.

Please email us at hello@actorium.ca if you have any questions.

Tempo & Rhythm

Movement Series

The key to every person and every character.

Tempo and rhythm were a major focus of Stanislavski. Everyone has their own internal and external tempo, and every action has a rhythm. In this course, you will learn to recognize your own tempo and, from that understanding, work with varying tempos to affect a role. You will learn how a change in rhythm changes the meaning behind any action.

Method of Physical Actions

Movement Series

Aligning inside and outside.

The mind-body connection is real and as an actor, you must use this truth in your acting. In this course, you will learn how you can rely on choreographed movement to bring the inner life of the character to fruition. This is especially beneficial for repeated takes of the same scene when actors are in danger of losing their initial spontaneity.

Course information:

  • Prerequisites: One Instrument course, one Technique course, and one Definition course
  • Cost: $190 + GST
  • See our Artists Package for reduced rates or see our Financial Aid for financial assistance.

All classes are listed 2 months in advance in a rotating order.

Audition

Performance Series

How to prepare and execute an audition.

Course information:

  • Prerequisites: Two Instrument courses, two Technique courses, one Definition course, and one Movement course

I’m writing to extend to you my deep gratitude for the work that you do. I admire your ability to see each of us in the class and speak so directly and clearly to something in us that we can’t articulate ourselves. The space and intimacy that you create is really beautiful, unlike anything I have experienced before.

In a world inundated with tips and tools for personal development, it’s so nice to be part of a community where failure and humiliation is encouraged. It’s liberating. It encourages you to stop running towards goals and instead start connecting with your self. A place to start pivoting towards what matters.
I signed up for Actorium because I was tired of managing my own fear. The classes encourage you to open up to that fear and step into it. It’s a really great way to get to know the parts of yourself that you have disowned, and have fun with it. A values-driven platform that attracts amazing and loving people who support and challenge each other. The interim online class was a great way to immerse yourself in character development from home and get courageous and creative in front of a camera. A good tool for self critique and awareness. Classes have a mix of people with different levels of skill. Everyone receives individualized feedback and specific challenges that encourage them grow.

Courtney

Michelle adapted very quickly to this shift towards online classes and it feels like their team has done it long before. Classes were pertinent and well constructed. Michelle is as good a teacher online as she is in person!

Jakob

I have been taking classes at Actorium on and off for a few years now. Every time, I learn something new and go deeper into the creative process. It is not always easy, in fact, it can be really painful at times. But Michelle and Rebecca have created a very safe and supportive place to do this exploration and growth. And it translated very well to a virtual space. If you are someone for whom acting is an important expression of your creative being, you absolutely cannot go wrong with these classes.

Dawn

I started off from the Supernaturally Shy class but due to Covid-19, my class was reformed into one of the online classes. The idea was definitely a little uncomfortable (like jumping into the deep end). I’m glad I was open minded though because I learned a lot and felt a genuine connection, and felt supported and encouraged throughout the lessons.

I highly recommend the online workshops at Actorium. There is helpful take-home content as well as fun practical exercises. It helped me understand more about performing in front of a camera and how to bring out more complexity and depth in my expression of characters. It’s also great to connect with other actors in this format. It feels a lot more intimate.

Since I started attending Actorium, my social anxiety levels dropped significantly. My initial goal in attending classes had nothing to do with acting, but self discovery. Thanks to Michelle’s work, I’m now emotionally more open and generally a more alive human being.
Thank you!

Alex

As a shy and self-conscious person, this class not only helped me get more used to acting, but also to observing and accepting myself.

Madeleine

The online program for [Central Role] was a challenging dive into a single character. I really liked the progression from the macro view of the play, honing in on the character and their “life” and finally focussing on a single monologue. It was a thought-provoking class and the online format worked well with meaty homework every week. Highly recommended.

Faye

The programs at Actorium always make me uncomfortable in the best way possible. Learning to push past that discomfort to see what lies beyond it has been a tremendously gratifying experience and I’m excited to keep exploring it.

Matt

I found the online class to be of great value in keeping and expanding on my acting skills during this time of isolation. As always, Michelle has done a great job in pushing her students to becoming better actors, even as we navigate our ways through a health crisis. It was a great opportunity to keep training and to remain connected with classmates, and to see the progression of their work in spite of social distancing measures. The growth we all experienced in such a short time and under these circumstances was impressive, and I look forward to bringing forward the new depths I’ve achieved to future class work.

Samm

I’m learning a lot in your classes – on many levels.
