Instrument Series:

Expression

Accessing stronger and deeper self expression.

Instrument Series

Like singing, acting is an art of self expression. Expression is at the base of it and is why so many people are drawn to acting.
But what inhibits your deep, free, authentic self expression? Through various exercises focused on developing stronger self awareness of habits that block the arteries of self expression, and through work on a selection of monologues, participants discover how to open up those blocks and experience the joy of natural and spontaneous self expression without having to force or push themselves into an inauthentic place.
Monologue work.

Dialogue

Accessing impulse in dialogue.

Instrument Series
When we face another person we often mask our real feelings. That mask is powerful and often out of our conscious control. It’s been many years in the making and often seems almost to have taken on a life of its own. In Dialogue we work with Actorium style Meisner technique and Public Solitude exercises to practice gradually strengthening our ability to take off that mask. This is our no filmed homework class. Simply come in and participate in regularly exercising dropping the mask that limits authenticity in relationship. Learn how to bring greater individuality and fluid spontaneity to your acting… and to your life. Scene work is integrated in classes 3 and 4.

Preparation & Imagination

Preparing through relaxation and Sense Memory.

Instrument Series

How an actor prepares is hugely impactful on performance. In this class you will learn how to work with an uneasy mind, and still enter a scene grounded and engaged. You will practice techniques that allow the nerves, that when incorrectly dealt with, disrupt and impede performance and instead use them to enhance performance. You will study Sense Memory and how to correctly apply it so that you can access imagination without losing presence.

Technique Series:

Script Analysis

Bringing the script to life.

Technique Series

The script is to the actor what the score is to the musician. The script dictates the appropriate intentions, feelings and reactions for the actor. But, just like each musician has their interpretation of the music, the actor also has their interpretation of the role.
In this program we look at: how an actor’s interpretation of a script will enhance their performance, how to break down a layered script and how to work with a weak script.

Scene Objective

Embodying the objective.

Technique Series

Once you’ve studied your role and story and are ready to begin acting, you drop everything but the scene objective. How do you do this? The truth is, more often than not, the scene objective is not even consciously known by the character. In this course we examine how to realize the scene objective in your acting, rather than holding it in mind as a mental construct. Monologue and scene work.

Relationship & Behaviour

Identifying how relationships affect the characters behavior.

Technique Series

What roles do you play out in your life? Friend? Employee? Customer? These are all roles and in each of them your manners and behaviours change. In acting, your character also plays roles. If we do it in life, you must do it in your acting. Learn how to identify your changing roles and how it affects your behaviour, and apply that same sensibilities to your character to bring a greater level of realism to your work.

Central Role

Diving into the title role of a character driven story.

Technique Series

A compelling character is the heart of the story. It is what pulls the audience in and engages the emotions. But, it is up to the actor to find the heart of the role, to create definition and ultimately to embody that character and bring them to life.
In this program we study what to pull from the story to define your character, how to add to and strengthen the core of the character and learn which choices strengthen the role and which choices will detract. Monologue work.

Movement Series

Discover your own patterns of movement and then adapt them for a role. Working with multiple models for the same role you will discover how your movement choices impact your performance. Thursdays

Tempo

The key to character.

Working from the outside in is a powerful tool to free the actor, to create range, and increase choices. Everyone has their own internal and external tempo. In this course you will learn to recognize your own, and then work with varying tempos to affect a role. Expect to work with a monologue and short class scenes.

Method of Physical Actions

Aligning inside and outside.

Movement Series

The mind body connection. It’s real and you can take advantage of it in your acting. In his later work Stanislavski worked extensively with bringing the inner life of the character together with the outer actions. In this course you will learn how you can rely on choreographed movement to bring the inner life of the character to fruition. This is especially beneficial for repeated takes of the same scene when actors are in danger of losing their initial spontaneity.

In this class you will learn what to concentrate on, and what not to bother with, when going in for an audition. This class is for those who have a strong working knowledge of acting and want to clarify how to best use their time in preparing for any audition.
