Acting Technique Class

It’s on the strength of observation and reflection that one finds a way. So we must dig and delve unceasingly. ”
– Claude Monet
When an actor reads the script, they envision their performance within that scene. They imagine the result. But if they merely act out the end result, they miss the most important part – it is the process that creates a good performance. The study of acting is the study of this process. In the Basics of Scene Study, we will take our first steps into breaking down that process. Integrating warm-up work on accessing vulnerability and working with nerves, we will step into the basic concepts that are inherent in every scene. Actors will develop a deeper understanding of the process and a deeper understanding of themselves as they begin the real work of acting.
Scene Study: Expression
Actor’s Development Class
Freeing the actor’s habitual restrictions in their acting through the work of finding a stronger, more personal and more meaningful connection with the text.

My job is usually to express emotion as freely as possible.
– Meryl Streep
The base of all acting is self expression; expression gives acting the magnetism that draws so many people into the art. It can be likened to an excellent musical performance, where the script is to the actor what the score is to the musician. The script dictates the appropriate intentions, feelings and reactions for the actor, but, just like each musician has their interpretation of the music, the actor also has their interpretation of the role.
In this class, we study how an actor’s interpretation of a script enhances their performance. Students will work with a monologue, learning to pick it apart and interpret it in different ways. In doing so they will discover depth, humour, and their own individuality in the role.
Scene Study: Character
Actor’s Development Class
Creating a clearly defined and recognizable character.
$295 + GST
At the heart of every good story is a compelling character. It is what pulls the audience in and engages the emotions. Writing alone cannot accomplish this: the actor must find the heart of the role, create definition, and ultimately embody that character and bring them to life. In this class, you will study what to pull from the story to define your character, how to add to and strengthen the character’s core, and learn which choices strengthen the role and which choices will detract.
This course is highly focused on the art of acting and recommended for experienced actors.
Our online course focuses on the internal makeup of the character. For a deeper focus on external choices like voice and movement, see our in-studio course.
Prerequisites: experienced actors
Acting for the Supernaturally Shy
Acting Technique Class
Training in the basics of acting and understanding how to work with shyness in your life.
$245 + GST
“In the circle of light on the state in the midst of darkness, you have the sensation of being entirely alone… This is called solitude in public… During a performance, before an audience of thousands, you can always enclose yourself in this circle, like a snail in its shell… You can carry it wherever you go.”
― Constantin Stanislavski, An Actor Prepares
People often assume acting is for the outgoing only — a shy person couldn’t even imagine themselves acting. But, people who are shy have a great gift in acting: their ability to access their vulnerability. This depth of feeling is a great benefit to any actor. When you realize how to value your shyness, you discover how to work with it rather than try to overcome it.
In Acting for the Supernaturally Shy, we step into acting slowly, and with a focus on working with our emotions and not against them. We cover all of the fundamentals of the regular Scene Study Basics class, but at a slower space, and with the recognition that someone who struggles with shyness will require different supports to open up in an online class environment.
All in class performance work is optional. You may watch or you may participate.
We look forward to working with you.

The fulfillment of your personal and artistic self expression is one of the most interesting and satisfying experiences in life. Something with so much possibility of true gratification often comes with seemingly insurmountable challenges. Through exercises in accessing vulnerability, self reflection and goal setting we learn how to face and work through those challenges in a supportive environment.
I have really found my online character development class to be a highly enriching experience. Michelle, our instructor, creates an amazing sense of community.
The class atmosphere is challenging, and supportive. I feel like I’ve grown significantly as an actor in terms of my ability to analyze/breakdown a scene/character and perform in a meaningful way. I’ve been invited to dial back emotion and see what comes up when I truly get to my character, their objectives and relationships.
I’ll be signing up for another online class!
Since I started attending Actorium my social anxiety levels dropped significantly. My initial goal in attending classes had nothing to do with acting, but self discovery. Thanks to Michelle’s work I’m now emotionally more open and generally more alive human being. Thank you.
I just wanted to say thank you again for holding a wonderful and safe space that allows people to wade through such difficult emotions. Many years ago I did one [public speaking] class and hated it and never tried again. I often wished since then that some kind of magical world existed where I could try a form of speaking or performing while having a positive voice somehow override my internal negative and terrified one… well you are providing exactly that magical environment! The way you verbally support each person while they are on stage is incredible. I think these classes are priceless and will have a positive impact on all aspects of life… truly life transforming!
I had not foreseen that the program was going to be that interesting and the experience so profound and rewarding.
I thought the online classes had a sharp focus specially when it came to analyzing our characters. Sitting and reading and re-reading the play, studying my lines and focusing on understanding my character has been a great experience. There’s something about the online format that makes it feel like I’m more “allowed” to take things at my own pace. I have learned so much about acting and about myself through my character of choice. Because I was in charge of making my own videos and had to rely on my gut when I had doubts. It’s been a very rough patch for me during the pandemic and I feel like the classes helped me ground myself, keep working on my acting and learn a lot about who I am.
I highly recommend the online workshops at Actorium. There is helpful take home content as well as fun practical exercises. It helped me understand more about preforming in front of a camera and how to bring out more complexity and depth in my expression of characters. It’s also great to connect with other actors in this format. It feels allot more intimate.
I am so happy with my progress! You have no idea. I was feeling so stuck behind that block that it was really testing my ambition and resiliency because I was feeling really powerless to change. I don’t know how it happened other than just breaking that part open and just allowing myself to be imperfect and where I am at… slowly. Though I still feel a certain trepidation over being really seen, I feel I can much more easily sit and be honest with that feeling of un-comfortability.
The online classes maintain the right kind of valuable space where we’re able to support and learn from each other. Michelle provides everyone with intelligent insights into character and story. At the same time we are also given a lot of independence and freedom. I was able to apply constructive critiques, develop a creative confidence and discover the fun to be had when working on a character.
I started off from the supernaturally shy class but due to Covid-19 my class was reformed into one of the Character class. The idea was definitely a little uncomfortable (like jumping into the deep end). I’m glad I was open minded though because I learned a lot and felt a genuine connection and felt supported and encouraged throughout the lessons.
I have always been terrified of public speaking and have never even in my dreams wished to be in the limelight on any stage. The thought of taking acting lessons would have never occurred to me. But I was introduced to this idea in such an intriguing way. Michelle said this class was a safe place for those who wanted a chance to tiptoe out into the spotlight and thus to explore hidden facets of their essence and personality. I’ve always been rather inhibited and not-quite-the-real-me in my range of expression in social settings so I thought this would be a potentially fun and cheap way to expand my range, as compared to say, sitting weekly on a therapists’ couch for months on end. Well it’s only been four classes so far but holy moly! I could not have guessed how eye-opening and personally rewarding this experience would be for my inner development and self-knowledge. Not only do I feel I have a better window to my authentic self (and what could possibly be more precious than that) but I also feel like I really have an inner eye and empathetic understanding of my fellow classmates which in so few hours with strangers is really incredible. I would urge anyone who resonates with me to try this course. Very highly recommended.
