Expression

Instrument Series

Enjoy your individuality as you learn to be more truthful to your genuine self-expression.

Self expression is at the heart of all arts. In this course we begin with simple exercises to find the connection to immersing yourself in an experience, and as the course progresses you will learn to trust your instincts and enjoy your authenticity as you take on increasingly challenging exercises. Along with the training in self expression you will be guided through the process of working in an online format, and how to use it successfully.

New students receive three classes of Dialogue.

Dialogue

Instrument Series

Freeing authentic impulses in relationship and dialogue.

When we face another person, we often conceal or repress our feelings; we wear a mask, experiencing one thing internally and presenting something else externally. The work of an actor is to remove this mask. In Dialogue, you will learn the tools to begin to take off that mask, and in the process, learn how to bring greater individuality and spontaneity to your acting, and inhabit deeper relational skills.

Dialogue runs on Mondays from 7-8:30pm PST or Wednesdays from 1-2:30pm PST or Gentle Dialogue on Thursdays 6pm PST.

Scene Objective

Technique Series

Understanding the importance of, and how to embody, the scene objective.

In this course, we examine how to develop the scene objective as an underlying force that impacts everything in the scene. Learn how to fully realize the scene objective not only it’s emotional form but also in its physical form. The course begins with examining the bases of an objective and builds on it, through exercises which allow the actor to practice freely living the objective, rather than holding on to it as a mental construct.

This course includes personal exercise feedback, a final report card and certificate.

Script Analysis

Technique Series

Breaking down a script down from an actor’s perspective.

The script is to the actor what the score is to the musician. The script dictates the appropriate directions, intentions, and relationships for the actor. In this program, we look at how an actor’s interpretation of a script will enhance their performance, how to break down a layered script, and how to work with a weak script. Please note: there is no self-filming in this course.

Relationship & Behaviour

Definition Series

Identifying how relationship affects the character’s behaviour.

We discover our behaviour when we interact with others. We behave differently in one relationship as opposed to another. Who we are depends on who we are with. If you do it in life, you must also find it in your acting. Learn how to identify your changing roles and how it affects your behaviour. Afte understanding these concepts in life, we apply that same sensibility to the character you play to bring a greater level of realism to your work.

Humour

Definition Series

Identifying and bringing to light the innate humour of every story and role.

Just as we appreciate seeing the humour in situations in our life, we appreciate the performance of an actor who finds the humour in the story. Whether it is comedy or drama, without the touch of humour the audience never feels the relief of the ‘seriousness’. A comedy without humour is just a series of jokes and a drama without humour very quickly becomes melodrama. Learn the keys to discovering and highlighting the humour embedded in every story and in every role.

Objective & Realism

Definition Series

Opening up the scene objective for heightened realism.

In this final course of the Definition Series, we focus on refining performance through integrating more of ‘you’ into the role. Humans are complex beings. Your complexity is important and is integral to bringing your full self to any role – no matter how big the role is or how small it is. Understand the use of opposites and tactics and why the freedom of acting really comes into being when you integrate these concepts.

Tempo & Rhythm

Movement Series

The key to identifying every person and every character.

Tempo and rhythm were a major focus of Stanislavski. Everyone has their own internal and external tempo, and every action has a rhythm. In this course, you will learn to recognize your own inner tempo and, from that understanding, work with varying tempos to affect a role. In the accompanying monologue for this course you will bring in actions with varying rhythms to discover how the meaning of your actions changes with rhythm.

Method of Physical Actions

Movement Series

Aligning inside and outside.

The mind-body connection is real and as an actor, you must use this truth in your acting. In this course, you will learn how you can rely on choreographed movement to bring the inner life of the character to fruition. This is especially beneficial for repeated takes of the same scene when actors are in danger of losing their initial spontaneity. It’s important not to skip the study of the inner life before using Method of Physical Actions, but once an actor has that connection, the Method of Physical Actions is a powerful tool.

I’m writing to extend to you my deep gratitude for the work that you do. I admire your ability to see each of us in the class and speak so directly and clearly to something in us that we can’t articulate ourselves. The space and intimacy that you create is really beautiful, unlike anything I have experienced before.

In a world inundated with tips and tools for personal development, it’s so nice to be part of a community where failure and humiliation is encouraged. It’s liberating. It encourages you to stop running towards goals and instead start connecting with your self. A place to start pivoting towards what matters.
I signed up for Actorium because I was tired of managing my own fear. The classes encourage you to open up to that fear and step into it. It’s a really great way to get to know the parts of yourself that you have disowned, and have fun with it. A values-driven platform that attracts amazing and loving people who support and challenge each other. The interim online class was a great way to immerse yourself in character development from home and get courageous and creative in front of a camera. A good tool for self critique and awareness. Classes have a mix of people with different levels of skill. Everyone receives individualized feedback and specific challenges that encourage them grow.

Michelle adapted very quickly to this shift towards online classes and it feels like their team has done it long before. Classes were pertinent and well constructed. Michelle is as good a teacher online as she is in person!

Jakob

I have been taking classes at Actorium on and off for a few years now. Every time, I learn something new and go deeper into the creative process. It is not always easy, in fact, it can be really painful at times. But Michelle and Rebecca have created a very safe and supportive place to do this exploration and growth. And it translated very well to a virtual space. If you are someone for whom acting is an important expression of your creative being, you absolutely cannot go wrong with these classes.

Dawn

I started off from the Supernaturally Shy class but due to Covid-19, my class was reformed into one of the online classes. The idea was definitely a little uncomfortable (like jumping into the deep end). I’m glad I was open minded though because I learned a lot and felt a genuine connection, and felt supported and encouraged throughout the lessons.

I highly recommend the online workshops at Actorium. There is helpful take-home content as well as fun practical exercises. It helped me understand more about performing in front of a camera and how to bring out more complexity and depth in my expression of characters. It’s also great to connect with other actors in this format. It feels a lot more intimate.

Since I started attending Actorium, my social anxiety levels dropped significantly. My initial goal in attending classes had nothing to do with acting, but self discovery. Thanks to Michelle’s work, I’m now emotionally more open and generally a more alive human being.
Thank you!

Alex

As a shy and self-conscious person, this class not only helped me get more used to acting, but also to observing and accepting myself.

Madeleine

The online program for [Central Role] was a challenging dive into a single character. I really liked the progression from the macro view of the play, honing in on the character and their “life” and finally focussing on a single monologue. It was a thought-provoking class and the online format worked well with meaty homework every week. Highly recommended.

Faye

The programs at Actorium always make me uncomfortable in the best way possible. Learning to push past that discomfort to see what lies beyond it has been a tremendously gratifying experience and I’m excited to keep exploring it.

Matt

I found the online class to be of great value in keeping and expanding on my acting skills during this time of isolation. As always, Michelle has done a great job in pushing her students to becoming better actors, even as we navigate our ways through a health crisis. It was a great opportunity to keep training and to remain connected with classmates, and to see the progression of their work in spite of social distancing measures. The growth we all experienced in such a short time and under these circumstances was impressive, and I look forward to bringing forward the new depths I’ve achieved to future class work.

Samm

I’m learning a lot in your classes – on many levels.
